Sierra Leone, Mabilafu

Sunbird Bioenergy and a consortium of investors acquired a majority stake in Addax Bioenergy Sierra Leone (ABSL) from AOG, and Sunbird Bioenergy has become the operations manager.

Addax Bioenergy is a renewable energy and agricultural operation that produces bio-ethanol (anhydrous fuel grade) from sugarcane for export and domestic use, and generates “green” electricity for Sierra Leone’s national grid. Addax Bioenergy operations are situated at Mabilafu near Makeni town, in the Bombali and Tonkolili Districts of Northern Sierra Leone.


Sustainability

The company has been designed and developed as a benchmark for sustainable investment in Africa and in accordance with EU, World Bank and African Development Bank standards. The company is RSB certified and registered under REACH that enables export to the EU.


Agriculture

The estate leases 23,500 Ha of land from the Government of Sierra Leone for the production of sugarcane and cassava. Currently 10,000 Ha to be developed under sugarcane that is forecast to produce 900,000 MT for the production of ethanol and power. The company is currently developing an additional 2,000 Ha of cassava production as a secondary feedstock.

Power Production

The power house was designed and constructed by De Smet Engineers and houses a 32 MW Siemens Turbo generator. Steam is generated from bagasse and other waste biomass in two ISGEC boilers. It is designed to supply a surplus 90-120 GWh into the national grid, which is approximately 20% of Sierra Leone’s national grid capacity.

Ethanol Production

The Praj designed ethanol plant has a designed production capacity of 85 million litres per annum. The plant produces anhydrous ethanol to that complies with the international EN 15376 specifications. The ethanol produced may be sold to the domestic Sierra Leone biofuel blending program, or shipped to customers in Europe.

Power Distribution

To connect to the national grid in Sierra Leone, the company has constructed and commissioned 40 towers over 10km for a high voltage line.

Ethanol Distribution

The company’s transportation fleet can transport the ethanol to customers in the local market and to the storage facilities at the Kissy Terminal where it can be exported to Europe and other regions.
